Introduction
Brief History
Department of Physics is a basic science department in the university, and has a remarkable history of about 45 years. The department of Physics was established in the year 1960 with commencement of M.Sc.(PHYSICS) course with five faculty members. Initially department was offering specialization in Solid State Physics, Electronics and Nuclear Physics. The department used to conduct research research in the areas of Solid State Physics and Ionospheric studies. In the year 1973 post graduate Diploma Course in Space Sciences and its applications was started. In 1989 the Department started two year M.Sc. Electronics programme. Till today approximately 600 students got their M.Sc. degree, 20 students got their M.Phil. and 25 students got their Ph.D. degree. Faculty members of the departments have produced about 300 research papers/articles/reports/notes in Indian and Foreign journals of repute.
Present Scenario
At present Department conducts M.Sc. Physics and M.Sc. Electronics course. From this academic year Department has reactivated Advanced Post Graduate Diploma Course in Space Sciences and its applications in collaboration with Space Application Centre, (ISRO) Ahmedabad and Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. There are thirteen faculty members working in different fields of research.The Research is conducted in the following areas Microwave (Dielectric and Remote Sensing Condensed Matter Physics (Theory and Experimental Ionosphere Studies Physics Education, Atmospheric Physics
Apart from M.Sc. Courses, Department conducts M.Phil and Ph.D. programme.
Infrastructure
The department has established laboratories for teaching M.Sc. Physics and M.Sc. Electronics students. Computers are available in Computer Laboratory for students.
Highlights
The department is updating the syllabus in regular intervals to remain active in recent trend of education. Department conducts Refresher Courses for College and University Teachers. The faculty members of the Department collaborate with the other Universities and Institute and avail facilities of these centre.
