Introduction
Brief History
The
department of Labour Welfare was established as part of school of social
sciences to offer a unique interdisciplinary course of master of Labour welfare
(MLW) in 1967. The MLW course is designed in such away that it has inputs from
various social sciences, Law and Management disciplines. It started as a
Diploma programme & was soon structured and offered as a post Graduate
professional Degree course, It is recognized by the Government of Gujarat as a
valid course for the post of Labour welfare officers under The Factories Act,
1948.
Present Scenario
The MLW course was completely restructured and revised in the academic
year 2002-2003 to meet the requirements of the present day industries. The
course as updated now incorporates comtemporary subjects like Human Resource
Development, Industrial Relations, Labour Legislations, organizational
Behaviour, Organisational Development, etc, It has very high demand for its
students, who secure placements in private and public sector companies as well
as Non-Government organizations (NGOs) and Government Departments. The
Department facilitate placements for it students.
Infrastructure &
Facilities
The Department of Labour Welfare is situated in the spacious &
recently renovated building of School of social sciences in the Gujarat
University campus, It has two large Classrooms, One students reading room /
practical work room, which are very well lit and has comfortable seating for the
students. Department has two computers and the procedure for linking with the
Internet is ongoing
Highlights
As the course offered by the Department is a professional one and it has
high potential for placements of its students, the Department invites
distinguished professional guest speakers having industry experience to interact
with students on a regular basis. The Department has initiated Alumni
Association of its past students to support the activities of the Department.
The Department also organizes various skill Development workshops for its
students.

Career
The course has very high potential for job placements in the positions of
personnel officers HRD executives, welfare officers and Industrial Relations
Executives for its students. The department facilitates placements by holding
campus interviews as per the needs of industries. The Department has secured
placements for 70% – 80 % of it students during last 5 years.
