Introduction

Brief History

Botany Department established in 1959 by (Late) Professor J.J.Chinoy is known all over for researches on Ascorbic acid, Growth and Development, Stress Physiology (Salt and Drought resistance) and Pre sowing seed treatments. Department has received many research grants from US - PL 480; DST; ICAR; UGC; CSIR: Gujarat Government, NGOs, Industries and other funding agencies (DAE) etc. Presently, the thrust areas of research have diversified to Stress Physiology, Tissue Culture and Bio – technology, Horticulture and Floriculture, Ecology and Environmental Biology.

Present Scenario

The Ex. Head of Department Prof. Dr. Alaknanda V.Vyas has made significant contribution in the field of ecophysiology emphasizing on various aspects of Water Stress, Heavy Metal Toxicity, Fluoride Toxicity, PGR’s on medicinal plants, spices, vegetables and cash crops.Professor Dr. Yogesh T. Jasrai has made significant contribution in the field of Micro propagation, Biotechnology and Biodiversity.Dr. Archana U. Mankad is working on post harvest physiological changes in plants with special emphasis on cut flowers to suit the floriculture industry. The growth, development and flowering of horticultural plants as influenced by PGR’s is also being studied. Dr. Hitesh A. Solanki is working on pollution and ecology with special reference to water and soil sediments. Dr. Himanshu A. Pandya is working on micro propagation and biotechnology of selected plants.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The department is equipped with UV Spectrophotometer, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Flame Photometer, Electrophorosis units, Densitometer, UV Transilluminator, Leaf area meter, Laminar air flow, Tissue Culture Lab (A.C.), Computers with printer and scanner, Photo Flourimeter, D.O.Meter, Turbidity Meter, Oil Separation Unit and other scientific equipments. The department has full fledged laboratories of Plant Physiology, Ecology, Environmental Biology, Tissue Culture and Biotechnology. The department also has a student library.

Highlights

1. Department is well known for its researches in India and Abroad. Staff members have been duly recognized and awarded Fellowships; National and International honours for excellent research in Plant Physiology and Environmental Biology and Embryology.

2. Staff members have served international and national societies as executive committee members.

3. Department is receiving students from Paris (France) for summer training projects.

4.  Staff members are Fellows of different National professional societies in India.

5. Staff members have delivered Presidential, Inaugural Key-note, Lead, Invited and Special Lectures at many conferences.

6. Department has organized 8 Refresher Courses in Botany / Biosciences for University and College Teachers of Western Zone

7. Department has organized 6 National Conferences including SAARC ones.
